- Best time to go
This itinerary works best between December and March, when Bogotá, Villa de Leyva, Paipa, and the Caribbean coast around Cartagena, Barú, and the Sierra Nevada are all in their driest stretch of the year. June through August is a secondary option for the Andean half of the trip — Bogotá and Villa de Leyva have a second dry season then — but it falls within the Caribbean’s wetter half of the year, so the second half of the journey carries a higher chance of rain, especially closer to August.
- Climate by destinations
- Bogotá: 8–19 °C (46–66 °F). Cool mountain climate all year round.
- Villa de Leyva: 9–24 °C (48–75 °F). Drier and sunnier than Bogotá despite the similar altitude, with a sharp drop in temperature after sunset.
- Paipa: 7–20 °C (45–68 °F). Cool Andean highland climate, similar to Bogotá.
- Sierra Nevada de Santa Marta / Palomino: 24–30 °C (75–86 °F). Warm and humid where the mountains meet the Caribbean; rainiest from September to November.
- Cartagena: 25–32 °C (77–90 °F). Caribbean heat year-round; dry season from December to April.
