This is the route for travelers who want to go past the Gold Museum and understand what the gold actually meant. Over 15 days we cross four entirely different archaeological landscapes — the Andean highlands around Bogotá, the San Agustín massif, the Amazonian frontier of Guaviare, and the Caribbean foothills of the Sierra Nevada — to piece together, site by site, how different pre-Columbian cultures read their territory, carved it in stone, painted it on rock, and in one case — the Tairona — still have living descendants in the region today.

Colombia doesn’t have four seasons; it has rainy and dry periods that shift by region — and on this route, that matters more than usual, since we cross three different climates. Bogotá, San Agustín, Medellín, and Támesis follow the Andean pattern of two dry windows (December–March and June–August). Santa Marta has its own dry season from December to April. Guaviare runs in reverse: its dry season is December through March, with the rest of the year bringing Amazonian rains. The only window where all seven stops align with favorable weather is December through March.
